Roman History: Pompeii HomeThis is a featured page

As a society, we are forced to repeat our mistakes if we don't learn from them. The pool of educated men and women in our cultures have a duty to teach history to our students in the hope that we are not doomed by a lack of creative thinking and judgment. In short, we are protected to an extent by our knowledge of the past, and by applying that knowledge we can aid the future. On that note, I have chosen to discuss the history of Pompeii in Italy, a city that met its destruction in the fires of a massive plinian volcano. The story of the man Pliny the Elder, for whom this cataclysmic type of volcano was named, will also be told.

This picture is taken from the city of Pompeii, looking out in the distance at the great volcano, Mt. Vesuvius.

Mt. Vesuvius

The goal of this site is not necessarily to state archaeological facts, but also to take a more humanistic approach to the tale of Pompeii and its sister city Herculaneum. It is important to note that these cities were Roman, and in 79 AD when this disaster struck, Rome was the marvel of the world, and its people were not much different than those that live in present-day Italy. This is a story of people like us, with cities like us, who shared hopes and dreams just as we do. And in the cooling ashes of their homes, they were preserved in their last moments of agony and confusion to speak to our generation. Let us together hear their long lost stories.

So let's now go to my page on Romans to find out more about them before we "dig" into Pompeii.
